Land with
four ways forward.
Prepare the arrival tasks that still have to work when your phone has no data, an app asks for a code, or one payment method fails.
- 01ENTRYofficial route + offline fallbackREADY
- 02CONNECTdata plan + saved instructionsREADY
- 03PAYmobile + card + cashREADY
- 04MOVEaddress + transfer handoffsREADY
Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data. Can you still show your first-stay address, explain where you are going, follow the first transfer and pay once? If not, the arrival plan is not ready.
This is a continuity checklist, not a packing list. It keeps one broken account, one dead battery or one failed network from blocking every arrival task at once.
Run this test before leaving home
- 01OFFLINE
Switch on airplane mode
Keep Wi-Fi off. This exposes anything that was never actually downloaded.
- 02ADDRESS
Find your first stay
Open its Chinese and English name, full address, phone number and confirmation number.
- 03ROUTE
Open the first transfer
See the arrival terminal, pickup or station name, route handoffs and final walk without reopening a booking app.
- 04BACKUP
Name two ways to pay
One must work without the payment app or the same linked account.
- 05HELP
Find the recovery owner
Open the support path for the eSIM/carrier, card issuer, accommodation and booked transport provider.
- 06POWER
Protect phone power
Start transfers charged, pack a suitable wall charger and cable, and check the exact power bank against the current flight or train rule.
Give every essential task an independent fallback
Official route, then a port fallback
Use the official China entry route for your passport, purpose, stay, route and port, then review the airport arrival sequence. If an arrival card applies, NIA’s online service is free.
Open the official NIA arrival card ↗NIA says travellers unable to submit online can use designated port QR codes or smart devices, or complete a paper arrival card. Do not pay a lookalike site.
Read NIA’s fraud warning ↗STOP: never copy an old form, pay for arrival-card filing, or assume the card replaces visa or visa-free eligibility checks.
Separate data from the number that receives codes
Choose home-carrier roaming, a travel eSIM or a local SIM only after checking the exact plan, phone model, activation trigger and roaming instructions with its provider.
Open safe mobile-data recovery →Keep the number used for account security reachable if possible, save provider setup/support instructions offline, and know where you can ask an official airport, station or accommodation desk for help.
STOP: do not delete an eSIM, guess a SIM PIN/PUK, reset the phone or enable chargeable home-line data roaming without checking the provider.
Make the backups independent
Set up one supported mobile-payment option before travel and keep its security number reachable.
Set up Alipay safely →Carry the physical card plus a second card from another account or network where practical.
Keep a modest RMB cash reserve in smaller notes. Do not store every payment method in the same phone case.
STOP: if a result is unclear, check the in-app bill before paying again. Never share a verification code or full card details with an unofficial helper.
Save the handoffs, not the whole city
Use the airport-to-city decision guide, then save the exact arrival terminal, official transfer provider, destination station or pickup point, and the final walk to the first stay. Recheck the airport, airline or transport operator before departure.
Keep the stay name and address in Chinese for an official taxi rank or information desk. Save the booking provider and accommodation contact separately from the booking app.
Open official China Railway 12306 ↗STOP: do not follow an unverified driver, QR code or pickup message merely because it contains your name or flight number.
Install fewer apps, but finish their setup
Download from an official app store or provider page. Open every chosen app before departure, set its language, complete only required verification, and test whether the feature you need works while offline.
Entry
NIA website or NIA 12367 channels when a current immigration task requires them. A browser bookmark may be enough.
Payment
One primary option such as Alipay or Weixin Pay, backed by physical card and RMB cash.
Map + translation
A map and translator you have personally tested. Build a verified Chinese place card →
Transport
12306 for booked rail tasks; exact airline, airport, city transit or ride provider only when it owns your journey.
Bookings
Airline and accommodation channels that can show the booking, receive changes and reach official support.
For a mainland domestic flight, check the visible CCC mark, recall status, watt-hours and carry-on rule before reaching security. Train rules are different. Open the flight-versus-train decision card →
Fixture type and paper, soap or drying supplies vary by venue. Carry a modest personal supply of tissues, hand sanitiser or soap and any familiar hygiene item you need; keep liquids within the transport rules that apply.
Save what gets you through the first hour

First-trip checklist FAQ
Which apps should I install before a first trip to China?
Choose by task: an official entry channel if needed, one payment app, a map and translation option you have tested, the official transport or booking provider for journeys you already bought, and your airline or accommodation channel. Install from an official store or provider page and keep offline alternatives.
Should I save a passport photo in my phone gallery?
Not by default. A full passport information page exposes sensitive identity data if the phone or cloud account is compromised. Use an official provider’s secure upload flow only when required, and keep the everyday offline pack limited to the details needed for arrival.
Can I complete the China arrival card without internet?
NIA says travellers who cannot complete the free online arrival card in advance can use designated QR codes or smart devices at the port, or complete a paper arrival card. Use only NIA’s official channel and check whether an exemption applies.
What if my phone has no data after landing?
Do not delete an eSIM or reset the phone. Use the saved accommodation address and transfer plan, go to an official airport or station information point, use a physical card or RMB cash where accepted, and change only one documented connectivity setting at a time.
