Book through China Railway 12306 or an official station channel, enter the passport identity exactly as instructed, and carry the same original passport to the station.
The difficult part is rarely the train itself. It is matching four things without error: the passenger, the exact station, the exact departure and the original identity document used for the order.
Beijing, Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing North are different stations. Treat the complete station name as part of the ticket—not as a neighbourhood hint.

Exact stations
Choose the complete departure and arrival station names. Check the map distance to each station before paying.
Passport identity
Use the valid physical passport that the passenger will carry on travel day—not a nickname or a different document.
Travel date
Confirm the local calendar date and departure time. Overnight journeys can arrive on a different date.
Recovery route
Keep the order number and official 12306 account access available. Save the station name offline in English and Chinese.

Use the official English website, the official 12306 app or a railway station ticket counter. China Railway states that it will not handle ticketing problems that occurred on other websites.

Add the passenger from the passport
For a foreign passport, follow the current passport-name instructions. Where the passport separates surname and given names, the official rule uses the displayed name order and spaces; passport numbers are entered without spaces.

Complete identity verification
The government visitor guide describes automatic verification, a manual passport information-page upload when requested, or verification with the valid passport at a station ticket office. Follow the status shown in your current account.

Check before you pay
Match passenger, full station names, local date, train number and seat class. Use only the payment methods presented by the current official checkout or station counter.

Save the order, not a fake ticket
Keep the order details accessible offline. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding ticket; the original booking identity document remains essential.

Do not navigate from the city name alone. Copy the full station name from the live order into your map and compare it with the Chinese station name before leaving your accommodation.

When the plan breaks, protect the booking first
Do not create competing passenger records
Recheck the passport-name and number instructions. If the current 12306 flow requests manual review or station verification, follow that route with the original passport.
Do not assume another station can board you
Check the current time and order status, then ask official station staff or 12306 what options remain. Availability, timing and current ticket rules control the outcome.

China Railway publishes current change, destination-change and refund conditions in its English FAQ. Capacity, timing, payment method and receipt status can change the available route.

China train ticket FAQ
Can foreign visitors buy China train tickets online?
Yes. China Railway says foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets with a valid foreign passport. The official 12306 English website accepts valid foreign passports, and the 12306 app and station ticket counters provide additional official routes.
Do I need to collect a paper ticket?
Usually an e-ticket and the original valid passport used for the booking are the essential pair. China Railway says the itinerary sheet and reimbursement receipt cannot be used as tickets. Follow the live order and station instructions for your specific journey.
What if the station gate does not read my passport?
Do not force the gate or switch documents. Show the original passport used for the booking and the order details to station staff, then follow the staffed identity-verification or ticket-check route they provide.
How early should I arrive at the station?
There is no safe universal number for every station and date. China Railway warns that the ticket counter, security check, identity verification and platform can involve walking and queues, and that ticket sales and checking stop before departure. Leave a substantial buffer and follow the station announcement.
Can I change or refund a China train ticket?
The official 12306 English service supports changes and refunds under current conditions, available capacity, time limits and fees. Open the live order before departure or take the original booking passport and order number to a designated station counter. Do not rely on an old fee table or a third-party promise.
