Protect the booking before changing the trip
Open the official order
Confirm the full departure station, local date, departure time, train number and current status.
Check whether it has departed
If it has not, go to official staff immediately. Do not lose time trying an unverified entrance or another station.
Keep the original passport ready
Use the same valid identity document used for the real-name ticket.
Use one official recovery route
Open 12306 change options or find a designated ticket window. Do not buy a second ticket before you understand the first.

Do not assume you can board at a different same-city station or that a map’s nearest “railway station” is the one on the ticket. Official railway staff and the live order control the next step.

Do not treat a railway disruption as your missed train
If the train is cancelled, disrupted or the railway cannot carry you as ticketed for railway reasons, follow station announcements and official staff. China Railway says staff will provide arrangements in this branch.

What should I do immediately after missing a train in China?
Keep the original order, verify the full station, date, train number and status, and use the official 12306 change route or a designated station window immediately. Keep the original passport used for the ticket ready. Do not buy a second ticket until the first order is clear; eligibility and seat availability control whether it can be changed.
Can I change a China train ticket after the train departs?
Under the current China Railway 12306 English rules, an eligible ticket may be changed once, subject to seat availability. A change after departure to a same-day train is listed without a change fee; a change to a next-day or later train is listed at 40% of the lower fare. The live order controls eligibility and price, and a ticket endorsed after departure cannot then be refunded.
Can I board from another station in the same city?
Do not assume that stations in the same city are interchangeable. The ticket identifies a departure station. Ask 12306 or staffed railway personnel what is permitted for the live booking before traveling to another station.
What should a foreign traveler take to the ticket counter?
Take the original valid passport used to buy the ticket and keep the official order number ready. If a reimbursement receipt was printed or the ticket was purchased in cash, the station route may be required for changes or refunds.
What if I missed the train because the railway caused the disruption?
That is a different branch from a passenger arriving late. China Railway states that station or onboard staff will arrange passengers who cannot travel as ticketed because of railway responsibility. Follow the station announcement and staffed route.
