Find the gap.
Before the incident.
Travel insurance for China is useful only when the actual policy covers this traveler, this route and the event that occurs. Use the checker with the policy wording open; a logo, benefit headline or “worldwide” label is not enough.
Do not buy by price alone. Confirm China and every transit point, the complete dates, emergency medical care, medical evacuation and repatriation, existing conditions, planned activities, disruption terms, valuables limits and the exact claim workflow. If the wording is unclear, ask the insurer before departure and keep the answer.
Use the contract, not your memory
Eight checks for one China trip
For each line, choose “found” only if you can point to the relevant policy wording or a written confirmation. Do not enter names, policy numbers, medical details or other sensitive information.
Nothing selected here is sent to China Travel OS. Reloading the page clears the result.
Coverage is only half the problem
Treatment may require money first
Government travel guidance warns that care is not free and a hospital may require a deposit or payment before treatment. Ask whether the insurer arranges direct billing or reimburses later, and what authorization is needed.
“Medical” may not mean “medevac”
Medical treatment, transfer between hospitals, evacuation and repatriation can be separate benefits with separate approval rules. Find each term rather than assuming one headline covers all four.
The first call needs to work
Save the insurer’s international assistance number, calling instructions and policy reference. Ask whether support can coordinate with a China hospital and whether messaging or email is an accepted backup.
Transit and remote areas count
Confirm every country passed through and the whole date range. Rural, mountain or high-altitude stops can change access to care and the activities or evacuation terms that matter.
Cancellation has named triggers
“I no longer want to go” is not the same as a covered event. Read the definitions, known-event rule, notice deadline, provider-refund sequence and evidence requirements.
One phone can exceed a sublimit
Check the per-item cap, depreciation, unattended or checked-baggage exclusions, receipts, police-report rule and how quickly loss must be reported.
Turn a vague promise into a usable answer
| ASK THIS | WHY IT MATTERS | KEEP THIS |
|---|---|---|
| “Show me the clause that covers mainland China and my transit points for these dates.” | Region labels and annual policies can hide trip-length or country limits. | Policy version, schedule and written answer. |
| “If a China hospital asks for a deposit, what do I do before treatment?” | Direct billing, guarantee of payment and reimbursement are different processes. | 24-hour number, authorization steps and payment evidence list. |
| “Who decides whether evacuation or repatriation is medically necessary?” | Travelers usually cannot arrange an expensive transfer and assume it will be covered. | Approval owner, limit, destination rule and exclusions. |
| “Are these conditions, medications and activities accepted?” | Undeclared conditions or excluded activities can affect related claims. | The insurer’s durable written confirmation—stored securely. |
| “What must I do before cancelling or replacing a booking?” | The travel provider may need to be contacted first, and the insurer may require mitigation. | Provider response, cancellation terms, receipts and timeline. |
| “What are the excess, benefit and per-item limits?” | A covered category may still pay less than the exposed cost. | Benefit table plus the full exclusion wording. |
Use the insurer’s official website, app, telephone number or broker channel. Keep health and identity documents protected; the public checker above deliberately stores none of them.
Safety first, then ownership and evidence
- 01SAFETY
Deal with immediate danger
Call the relevant emergency service or go to a safe staffed place. Do not delay urgent care merely to complete an insurance checklist.
- 02ASSIST
Contact assistance as soon as practical
Use the official 24-hour route and ask what it can arrange, which facility or provider to use, and what authorization is required.
- 03EVIDENCE
Preserve the record
Keep dates, visible status, receipts, reports, provider messages and the insurer reference. Mask unrelated account, card and passport details.
- 04OWNER
Ask before changing the loss
When safety allows, contact the airline, hotel or other responsible provider before cancelling, replacing or abandoning a service.
- 05CLAIM
Follow the claim clock
Use the policy’s notice, document and submission deadlines. Keep the claim decision and escalation or complaint route.

Travel insurance for China FAQ
Is travel insurance mandatory for a trip to China?
Do not rely on a universal yes-or-no answer. Entry and visa-document requirements can vary by passport, purpose, visa route and application location. Check the current Chinese embassy, consulate, visa-centre or immigration source responsible for your case. Separately, several governments advise travelers to hold appropriate cover because healthcare and medical evacuation can be expensive.
Is credit-card travel insurance enough for China?
It may or may not be. Verify how the cover is activated, the maximum trip length, territory, medical and evacuation limits, pre-existing-condition rules, card-payment requirements, exclusions, excess and assistance number. A card benefit is not confirmed cover until its policy wording fits this exact trip.
Will a China hospital bill my travel insurer directly?
Do not assume it. Official government guidance warns that medical care in China is not free and that hospitals may require a deposit or payment before treatment. Ask the insurer how authorization, direct billing and reimbursement work, and keep an independent emergency-payment reserve where possible.
Does this checker tell me whether a claim will be paid?
No. It only exposes questions and missing confirmations. The policy contract, disclosed facts, event circumstances, exclusions, evidence and insurer decision control a claim. Get ambiguous answers from the insurer in a durable written form before travel.
