Verify the ingredient.
Pack the proof.
A prescription issued abroad does not by itself prove that the same active ingredient and quantity can enter China. Confirm the substance, route and documents before packing—and never stop or replace prescribed treatment without your clinician.
Use the generic active ingredient—not only the brand. Keep original labeled packaging, a valid prescription and a doctor letter. Confirm legality for China and every transit point. Controlled or uncertain medicine needs direct official confirmation and a declaration plan; an unsupported “30-day supply is always fine” rule is not safe.

Do not solve these at the airport
A brand name is insufficient
Find the generic active ingredient, dosage form, strength and total quantity. Different brands can contain different substances across markets.
Ask the rule owner
Check the relevant Chinese mission, China Customs or national drug authority route for the exact ingredient. Save the durable official reply and its date.
Evidence and quantity rules change
Official guidance distinguishes narcotic and psychotropic medicines from ordinary personal medication. Confirm the certificate, prescription quantity and declaration route before travel.
Do not assume a foreign prescription protects it
Current U.S. government China guidance warns that cannabis and derivative products may be illegal in China. Obtain authoritative confirmation; do not pack a product that is not permitted.
Do not abruptly stop or improvise
If travel depends on a medicine that cannot be confirmed, take the problem back to the prescribing clinician early enough to make a safe clinical plan.
One itinerary crosses several rule sets
A permitted China entry does not decide airport transit, origin-country export or return import. Check every border and security checkpoint.
Make every line match the package
| RECORD | WHAT TO CHECK | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|---|
| Original labeled package | Traveler name where labeled, generic ingredient, brand, strength, dosage form and dispensing details. | Loose pills and relabeled containers make identity and personal use harder to establish. |
| Current prescription | Generic ingredient, strength, prescribed dose and quantity consistent with what is carried. | The INCB China summary marks a valid medical prescription as required for internationally controlled medicines. |
| Doctor letter | Medication name, dose, total quantity and statement that it is for the traveler’s personal medical use. | Government travel guidance recommends a clinician letter; exact local requirements can be stronger. |
| Diagnosis certificate | Ask whether required for the exact controlled category and whether any translation or endorsement is needed. | Current official China guidance names a diagnosis certificate and proof of identity for certain controlled medicines. |
| Official confirmation | Exact ingredient, category, quantity, documents, transit and Customs/declaration instruction. | A general embassy FAQ or another traveler’s clearance may not answer this medicine. |
| Protected copies | Keep one accessible set and one secure backup without exposing unnecessary medical or identity data. | Documents must survive a lost bag or dead phone without becoming an identity-risk bundle. |
China Customs uses personal-use and reasonable-quantity principles. For narcotic drugs and Category I psychotropic medicines, current official guidance refers to the maximum quantity allowed on a single prescription with the required supporting evidence. Confirm the exact category and never enlarge the amount based on a travel blog.
The legal pack still has to survive the journey
- 01ACCESS
Keep essential medicine accessible
Use carry-on baggage where airline and security rules permit, with the prescription and supporting proof beside the medicine.
- 02SECURITY
Check every special item
Liquids, injections, needles, cold packs, battery-powered devices and medical equipment can trigger separate carrier or security requirements.
- 03STORAGE
Follow real storage instructions
Use the manufacturer or clinician temperature and handling requirements. Do not assume an aircraft hold, hotel fridge or ice pack maintains the required range.
- 04PROOF
Keep the quantity together with its basis
Do not split, conceal or repackage medicine to avoid inspection. Keep the amount, prescription and official confirmation easy to reconcile.
- 05DECLARE
Use red when required or uncertain
China Customs tells passengers who do not know which channel applies to ask an officer or use the Goods to Declare channel.
A neutral request for the correct channel
This medication is for my personal medical treatment. I have the original package, prescription or medical certificate, and identity document. I am not sure whether I need to declare it. Please direct me to the Customs declaration channel.
这些药品仅供我本人治疗使用。我带有药品原包装、医生处方或诊断证明以及身份证明。我不确定是否需要申报,请带我到海关申报通道。谢谢。
This card does not claim the medicine is permitted and does not replace an official declaration or requested document.A foreign prescription may not be repeatable
Build a continuity record
Keep the generic names, doses, prescribing clinician, secure prescription access, insurer assistance route and a plan for delays. Do not make a public or shared note containing a full medical history.
Use a legitimate medical provider
If medicine is lost or unavailable, contact the insurer and a reputable hospital or clinic. A China doctor may need to assess the traveler and the same medicine may not be available.
Buy from an unverified seller
Government travel guidance warns of counterfeit or substandard medication. Do not rely on an unknown marketplace, social contact or unlabeled substitute.
Use the medical plan
If missing treatment creates an urgent health risk, follow the clinician’s emergency instructions and seek medical help. In mainland China, the ambulance number is 120.
Traveling with medication FAQ
Can I bring prescription medication into China?
There is no safe universal answer for every medication. Confirm the active ingredient—not only the brand—with the Chinese authority responsible for the rule and check every transit country. China Customs applies personal-use and reasonable-quantity controls, while narcotic and psychotropic medicines have additional restrictions and documentation rules.
How much medication can I take to China?
Do not rely on a generic 30-day or 90-day claim. China Customs uses personal-use and reasonable-quantity principles. Current official guidance for narcotic drugs and Category I psychotropic medicines refers to the maximum quantity permitted on a single prescription when the required diagnosis certificate and identification are presented. The exact classification and on-site clearance remain official decisions.
Do I need a doctor letter for medication in China?
Carry the current prescription and original labeled packaging. Government travel guidance also recommends a doctor letter listing the medication name, dose and personal medical use. Controlled medicines can require stronger evidence such as a diagnosis certificate and proof of identity. Ask the responsible authority whether translation, endorsement or another document is required for the exact substance.
Can I bring ADHD medication to China?
ADHD is not the legal classification. The active ingredient controls the answer, and some stimulant medicines are restricted. Do not infer permission from a prescription issued abroad or from another traveler’s experience. Get written confirmation for the exact ingredient, strength, quantity and route before packing it.
Should medication go in carry-on or checked baggage?
Keep essential medication and its documents accessible in carry-on baggage where airline and security rules permit. Confirm liquid, injection, needle, battery, cooler and ice-pack rules with the airline and every departure or transit security authority. Follow the manufacturer or clinician storage instructions rather than an improvised temperature plan.
