Refund missing?
Follow the transaction.
A merchant promise, an app refund status and a bank posting are not the same event. Read the current status, preserve the evidence and contact the owner of that stage.
- 01Read the exact app status
- 02Save transaction evidence
- 03Identify the current owner
- 04Ask one precise question
Start with the status—not a new refund.
Open the original transaction in the official payment app. Record the merchant, amount, payment date, refund date, exact refund wording and every visible transaction or refund identifier. A second refund request can complicate the record.
“Refunded” can describe four different stages
Use the stage you can prove. Do not assume that one party’s status proves the next party has finished.
Initiated
The merchant submits a refund. A verbal promise alone does not show that submission occurred.
Processing
Alipay or Weixin Pay shows the state it currently has for the original transaction.
Posted
The bank that issued the overseas card determines when and how a credit appears on that account.

Status wording can change by app version and transaction. Use the meaning shown on your screen; this guide does not invent a fixed menu path.
AThe merchant agreed to refund, but the app shows nothing
Next owner: merchant. Ask: “Was the refund submitted against the original transaction? On what date, for what amount, and what confirmation or reference can you share?” Save the agreement and receipt. Move on only when initiation is visible or documented.
BThe app says requested, waiting or processing
Next owner: the payment product. Save the exact wording and identifiers. Ask official support whether the refund is still inside its process, whether another trace reference is available, and whether you need to do anything. Do not promise when the issuer will post it.
CThe app says successful or completed, but the card shows no credit
Next owner: the issuing bank. Give the safe details: original merchant, payment date, refund date, amount, original-card last four digits and available transaction/refund references. Ask whether it can locate a merchant refund or credit. Never send a full card number or security code by chat.
DOnly part arrived, or the amount or currency looks different
Check the merchant amount first. Compare the agreed refund with the RMB refund shown by the app. If the merchant submitted the correct amount but the card account differs, ask the issuer how it posted and converted that credit. Do not promise an exchange rate, fee result or recoverable difference.
EThe original card was replaced, expired, frozen or closed
Next owner: the issuing bank. Ask how it handles a merchant credit addressed to the original card account. Do not assume it will automatically map to a replacement card. For Alipay, also check the Alipay balance if the card return failed, as its consumer help page describes that as a possible outcome.
FThe transaction was unauthorized or is a purchase dispute
Next owner: the issuing bank’s dispute team. This is separate from ordinary merchant refund follow-up. Describe what happened and ask for the issuer’s eligibility rules, deadline and evidence list. We cannot promise that a dispute is available or will succeed.

Save enough evidence to trace one refund
- Merchant name and location, original payment date and original amount.
- Refund amount, requested/submitted date and exact current app status.
- Original transaction/order identifier and any visible refund or trace reference.
- Merchant receipt or written confirmation and privacy-redacted screenshots.
- Issuer name and only the last four digits of the original card when needed.
Never share a password, one-time code, full card number, security code, live payment code, complete passport image or an unlocked phone.
PHOTO NEEDED · 4:3 · Traveller organising a receipt and privacy-redacted screenshots into one refund evidence record; no readable personal data.
Ask the party that controls the current stage
No initiation proof or wrong refund amount
Ask when the refund was submitted against the original transaction, for what amount, and what confirmation can be shared.
Requested, processing or unclear app state
Use official in-app support and ask what the state means for this transaction and whether another safe trace reference exists.
App completed, card not posted
Ask the bank shown on the original card to search for the refund and explain how this account displays merchant credits.
Tencent currently lists Weixin Pay service at 95017 in mainland China and +86 571 95017 for overseas, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan users. Verify support details on the official page before calling because contact information can change.
There is no single safe arrival time
Alipay’s consumer help page lists 7 days for Visa, Mastercard and JCB international cards, while also saying that actual receipt depends on the bank. The page does not clearly identify calendar versus working days or prove that every current inbound-wallet flow is identical. Treat it as a provider reference—not a guarantee.
No equally precise current public Weixin Pay timeframe was verified for a refund to an overseas-issued card in this exact visitor scenario. Do not copy Alipay’s reference onto Weixin Pay.
When the original card changed: the issuer is the authority for that account. Alipay’s help page says a failed return to an abnormal or closed card may appear in the Alipay balance, so check both only in that product-specific case; do not generalise it to Weixin Pay or every issuer.
An ordinary refund is not a charge dispute
- 01
Establish the refund state
Confirm whether the merchant submitted it and what the payment product currently shows.
- 02
Ask the issuer to trace a completed refund
Use safe transaction details and every available reference. Ask how the issuer posts credits to this account.
- 03
Use the dispute team for a true dispute
For an unauthorized transaction or unresolved purchase dispute, ask the issuer about its own process, deadline and evidence requirements. Do not submit duplicate or false claims.
Refund pending FAQ
Why is my Alipay or Weixin Pay refund not showing on my card?
A merchant promise, a submitted refund, a payment-app completion state and an issuing-bank posting are different stages. Check the exact app status and save the transaction and refund references before contacting the party that owns the current stage.
Does refund successful mean the money is already back in my bank account?
No. A successful or completed status in a payment product does not prove that your issuing bank has posted the credit. Ask the issuer to search for the refund using the safe transaction details and any refund reference available.
How long does an international-card refund from China take?
There is no safe universal promise. Alipay has a consumer help reference that lists seven days for several international-card brands while also saying actual arrival depends on the bank, but its page does not clearly define the day type or every current inbound-wallet scenario. No equally precise current Weixin Pay overseas-card time was verified for this visitor scenario.
What if the card I used was replaced, expired, frozen or closed?
Contact the bank that issued the original card and ask how it handles a credit sent to that account. Do not assume the refund will automatically move to a replacement card or another destination. Alipay also tells users to check their Alipay balance if a return to an abnormal card fails, but that is not a universal rule for every product.
Should I start a chargeback when a refund has not arrived?
First establish whether the merchant initiated the refund and what the payment product shows. An unauthorized or disputed transaction belongs to the issuing bank’s separate dispute process; eligibility, deadlines and outcomes depend on that issuer and jurisdiction.
