Leave for the flight.
Not just “the airport.”
Verify the airport code and terminal from the operating airline, build backward from its live deadline, and keep a second route that does not depend on the same app.
City name ≠ airport code
Use the operating airline’s live record as the source of truth. A booking seller, map pin, old screenshot or city name cannot safely replace the exact airport code and terminal.
Make one departure card
Airline + flight number, including any codeshare operating carrier.
PEK, PKX, PVG, SHA, XIY, CKG or the code shown on the live record.
Current terminal and check-in area; recheck on departure day.
The airline’s current check-in and bag-drop cutoff for this itinerary.
Original passport and any document required for the destination or transit.
Chinese airport/terminal name, pickup time and independent backup.
Beijing Capital (PEK) is not Beijing Daxing (PKX). Shanghai Pudong (PVG) is not Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA). Correcting the airport can take far longer than changing terminals.
Departure time is the last number, not the first
Airline, airport, destination, baggage and passenger needs differ. Verify live deadlines; do not turn a generic “three hours” slogan into a guarantee.
Use a primary route and an independent backup
Airport rail / metro
Useful when operating hours, transfers, stairs and final terminal walk fit the luggage and clock.
Official taxi
Show the Chinese airport and terminal. Use the meter and request a receipt.
Ride-hailing
Set the exact terminal departure level or zone and match the plate before boarding.
Verified pickup
Confirm operator, vehicle, total price, meeting time and a fallback number.
If the rail route closes or the app fails, the fallback should still know the correct airport, terminal and Chinese name.

Official airport ↗Protect the flight, not the original plan
Contact the operating airline immediately, get a realistic transfer time and ask what ticket options remain.
Confirm the live terminal with staff, then use the official inter-terminal route.
Compare the live rail route and a verified road alternative; do not switch repeatedly without a clock.
Show the saved Chinese airport card at a staffed taxi point and use an independent payment method.
China airport departure FAQ
How early should I leave for a China airport?
Build backward from the operating airline’s current check-in or bag-drop deadline, then add terminal walking, security and exit formalities, transport time and disruption margin. Do not use one universal airport buffer for every flight.
How do I confirm the right airport and terminal?
Check the operating airline’s live booking or check-in record for the IATA airport code, terminal and flight number. Beijing and Shanghai each have two major airports, so a city name alone is not enough.
What if the terminal changes?
Follow the operating airline and airport’s live display or official notice, then use the airport’s official terminal-transfer route. Do not book a new long-distance car until staff confirm the correct terminal.
