You do not need
fluent Chinese.
You need a handoff.
Bring one translation route that works offline, optional Dola or DeepSeek AI help for longer questions, and a few Chinese phrases that still work when the microphone, network or app does not.
Could you type the destination?
可以
Choose by device and offline proof, not by popularity. Type one short sentence, show the Chinese full-screen, and ask the other person to type back.
One offline tool.
One different backup.
Apple Translate
Download both your language and Simplified Chinese, then turn on on-device mode and test text, conversation and camera use without a connection.
OPTIONAL AI: DOLA OR DEEPSEEKGoogle or Microsoft
Download the required offline packs before travel. Microsoft’s current Android guidance limits offline use to text, camera and saved phrase features—not voice conversation.
OPTIONAL AI: DOLA OR DEEPSEEKSaved phrase screen
Keep addresses, hotel phone numbers and the cards below available as screenshots. This layer survives a dead microphone, login prompt or failed cloud service.
BACKUP: STAFFED DESK OR HOTEL CALLDo not install your only translation tool after landing. App-store access, account prompts, permissions and downloads can all become a new problem when you are tired, offline or already at a taxi queue.
Three useful routes,
with different limits.
Typed and spoken conversation, full-screen display, camera text and saved favourites.
Download both languages; Apple says on-device output may be less accurate.
iPhone baselineTyped text, near-real-time conversation, camera translation and saved phrases.
Downloaded languages support offline translation; camera use also requires the relevant downloads.
Familiar offline routeText, photo, split-screen speech, phrasebook and Chinese pinyin.
Android offline packs cover text and camera, not voice/conversation. Microsoft currently says iOS offline is unavailable.
Android alternativeApp features, supported languages and regional availability change. The live app screen on your own phone controls; the table is a setup decision, not a guarantee of access.
Ask directly.
Then back-translate.
Dola and DeepSeek can help prepare a longer explanation for a hotel desk, driver or booking provider. Open only the official services below; they are online AI helpers, not replacements for an offline translator.
- Ask for polite Simplified Chinese, not just “Chinese.”
- Tell it to preserve names, phone numbers, addresses and booking codes exactly.
- Request an English back-translation so you can check the meaning.
- Break the problem into one action per message.
Open the current international AI service and ask for a short bilingual message.
ASK DOLA ↗DEEPSEEKDeepSeek InternationalOpen DeepSeek’s official chat service and ask it to simplify, translate and back-translate.
ASK DEEPSEEK ↗Remove passport images, full card details, payment codes, passwords, one-time codes and private medical documents. For medical, legal, police, immigration or allergy-critical wording, use a qualified human or the responsible official provider; a plausible translation can still be wrong.
When speaking fails,
let the screen talk.
Take screenshots of the cards you expect to use. Keep the Chinese large, and show only one request at a time.
Hello, I don’t speak Chinese.
Please type here.
Please speak more slowly.
I need to go to this address.
Is this the correct entrance?
Please help me contact my hotel.
Please tell me the total before I pay.
Please help me find a staff member who speaks English.
Do not make a generic translation app the decision-maker.
For police, ambulance, a lost passport, immigration or serious illness, open the emergency card and contact the authority or your own embassy/consulate route.
Open emergency helpShort. Typed. Confirmed.
- 01
Give context first
“Hotel check-in,” “taxi destination” or “train ticket change” helps the translator choose the right meaning.
- 02
Use one request
Replace a long story with one action: “Please check whether this is the correct station.”
- 03
Show, do not shout
Typed text is easier to review in a loud station and avoids repeating unclear speech.
- 04
Confirm the fixed detail
Point to the address, time, price, platform, gate or booking number and ask for a yes/no confirmation.
- 05
Back-translate the reply
Have the other person type, then translate their exact answer back before you act or pay.
Change the channel.
Do not keep guessing.
Switch to typed text
Check microphone permission once. If noise, accents or place names still defeat speech recognition, type one short request, enlarge the Chinese and let the other person type the answer.
Crop to one item
Check camera permission, move closer, hold the phone straight and photograph one line at a time. Decorative type, glare and busy backgrounds can make OCR unreliable.
Use the saved handoff
Open the Chinese address, phrase screenshot or hotel phone number you saved before travel. Do not assume public Wi-Fi or a new account login will rescue the moment.
Stop at the risk boundary. A confident-looking translation is not confirmation of an allergy, medicine, police statement, immigration answer, contract or payment instruction.
Pass the airplane-mode test.
Downloading a pack is not proof. Switch on airplane mode and complete the exact tasks you expect to need.
Translation in China FAQ
What is the best translation app for a China trip?
There is no single best app for every phone. On iPhone, Apple Translate with downloaded languages is a strong offline baseline. On Android, test Google Translate or Microsoft Translator offline before departure. Keep essential Chinese phrases separately, and use Dola or DeepSeek only as an optional online AI helper.
Can I rely on Google Translate in China?
Do not make any cloud service your only route. If you already use Google Translate, install it and download the required language packs before departure, then prove that typed and camera translation work in airplane mode on your phone.
Are AI chatbots better than translation apps?
They can help turn a longer explanation into polite, simple Chinese and provide a back-translation, but access and accuracy can vary. Use a dedicated offline translation route for everyday communication and a qualified human or responsible official provider for medical, legal, safety or identity-critical wording.
What should I save before arriving in China?
Save your hotel, airport or station and next destination in Chinese; keep screenshots and phone numbers; download Simplified Chinese plus your language; and save a small set of bilingual phrases that can be shown without a connection.
What if voice or camera translation keeps failing?
Check the app’s microphone or camera permission once, then stop repeating the same failed method. Move to one short typed sentence, enlarge the Chinese result and ask the other person to type back. For a decorative menu or crowded sign, crop to one item and retake it straight-on; for allergies, medicine, police or payment, use a responsible human or official service instead of trusting uncertain OCR or speech recognition.
