Keep the number.
Choose the data.

Your login phone number and your travel-data line do not have to be the same. Separate those two jobs first, then choose roaming, a travel eSIM or a local physical SIM.

DUAL-LINE PLANKEEP BOTH UNDER CONTROL
THE DECISION

Need your normal number with least setup? Check roaming. Need separate data on an unlocked compatible phone? Check travel eSIM. Need a Chinese number/local plan? Check a staffed local physical SIM.

THREE OPTIONS

No option wins every trip

AHOME ROAMING

Least identity switching

Your usual SIM and number remain primary. The carrier controls China coverage, partner networks, data allowance, tethering and price.

  • Strong for account SMS continuity
  • May be simplest for short trips
  • Cost and fair-use limits can be high or complex
BTRAVEL eSIM

Separate data line

A provider supplies an eSIM profile for a compatible, unlocked phone. Many products are data-only; the exact plan controls SMS, voice, routing and hotspot use.

  • Can install before departure
  • Useful in dual-SIM setups
  • Do not assume it includes a phone number
CLOCAL PHYSICAL SIM

Chinese number and local service

Official guidance allows foreign visitors to apply at operator service offices with a passport or accepted residence document. Plans, branch handling and language support vary.

  • Local call/SMS capability can matter
  • Requires staffed identity registration
  • Physical slot, device bands and lock status matter
01 / CHOOSE BY CONSTRAINT

Start with the hardest requirement

01I must receive bank or account SMS on my existing number

Keep the home line active for SMS under the carrier’s roaming terms. Choose travel data separately if needed.

02My phone has no physical SIM slot

Confirm the exact model supports eSIM use for the intended provider and region. Do not assume a mainland operator eSIM will work on an overseas device.

03I need a Chinese mobile number

Use a staffed local operator route and passport registration. A data-only travel eSIM does not satisfy this need.

04I want the least arrival-day setup

Check the home carrier’s China roaming offer or install a compatible travel eSIM before departure, then test the activation rules.

05I use a lot of data or hotspot

Compare the live allowance, throttling, tethering, activation and expiry terms of the actual plan. “Unlimited” labels require the full fair-use terms.

02 / DEVICE CHECK

Four facts before you buy

  1. UNLOCKED?

A phone locked to the home carrier may reject another physical SIM or eSIM.

  2. eSIM-COMPATIBLE?

Support varies by exact model and purchase region, not just by product family name.

  3. DUAL-SIM BEHAVIOR?

Know which line handles data, calls and SMS, and whether data switching could create home-carrier charges.

  4. NETWORK BANDS?

The device and provider must support compatible service. Ask the provider about the exact model.

03 / PROTECT LOGIN ACCESS

Data is not identity continuity

HOME LINE

Keep the recovery channel

Account SMS, issuer verification and support calls may still depend on the number used before travel. Check inbound SMS and roaming costs with that carrier.

+
DATA LINE

Carry the internet traffic

Set the intended travel line for mobile data. Disable data on the home line if that is part of your cost-control plan, without disabling needed SMS access.

=
TRAVEL SYSTEM

Test both independently

Confirm a security message can arrive and a web page can load. One successful test does not prove the other.

04 / LOCAL PHYSICAL SIM

Use a directly operated service office

  1. Find a China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom service office and confirm it handles foreign-passport applications.
  2. Bring the original passport or another identity document accepted by the operator.
  3. Ask for the plan’s data, voice, SMS, duration, renewal, cancellation and deposit/fee terms.
  4. Install and test service at the counter before leaving.
  5. Save the phone number, plan name and official support channel.
05 / BEFORE THE FLIGHT

Run a reversible connectivity test

1

Confirm phone model, lock status and eSIM/physical-slot support.

2

Save the plan’s activation, APN, partner network and support instructions offline.

3

Install only when the provider instructs; know whether installation starts validity.

4

Label the home and travel lines clearly in device settings.

5

Set the intended data line and review data switching/roaming choices.

6

Keep a Wi-Fi and offline-arrival route if activation fails.

DO NOT DELETE AN eSIM TO “START OVER”

The profile or QR code may not be reusable. Apple’s support guidance says not to erase an eSIM merely as a troubleshooting step unless the carrier directs it. Use the provider’s reissue route first.

06 / QUICK QUESTIONS

China internet FAQ

Should I use an eSIM, roaming or a local SIM in China?

Choose by the functions you need. Home roaming is often simplest for keeping your existing number and SMS. A travel eSIM can provide a separate data line on a compatible unlocked device. A local physical SIM can provide a Chinese number and local plan through an operator service office with passport registration. Price, coverage and eligibility are provider-specific.

Can a travel eSIM receive Alipay or bank SMS codes?

Only if that specific plan includes an SMS-capable number. Many travel eSIM products are data-only. Keep access to the phone number, email or banking route used for account verification and check the exact plan before purchase.

Can foreign visitors buy a local SIM in China?

Yes. China’s official 2025 visitor guide says foreigners can take a passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card to service offices of China Telecom, China Mobile or China Unicom to apply for a SIM and activate service. Branch acceptance, plans and hours should be checked locally.

Should I delete an eSIM when it does not work?

No. Device support guidance warns against erasing an eSIM merely for troubleshooting unless the carrier directs it. The activation code may not be reusable. Save the plan details and contact the provider first.
